Frequently Asked Questions
QUESTION: How do I check my VAD Pro software version number?
ANSWER: To check the version number of VAD Pro, access the drop down menu on the top left corner of any of the Palm screens, where the clock is typically located. Select "Info" from the drop down menu. A list of applications (in alphabetical order) will appear, with their file sizes to the right. Click the "Version" box at the bottom of the screen, and use the scroll bar on the right to find the application you wish to check. The newest version numbers are posted in the VAD Pro forum for reference.
QUESTION: My VAD Pro came with a CD-Rom in the white envelope of the kit box. What is this CD used for?
ANSWER: The VAD Pro CD contains a backup of the software files contained on the VAD Pro, as well as electronic versions of the VAD documentation included in the kit box. This disc also serves as an install gateway from the Palm Desktop, which allows the VAD Pro to link with a computer for critical support and updates.
QUESTION: My VAD Pro has lost battery charge completely. How do I restore it?
ANSWER: Follow the instructions on the supplied VAD Quick Reference Guide, included in the white envelope in your VAD Pro kit box.

QUESTION: I am not familiar with Palm OS. Where do I learn about navigating through the tool using the Palm OS functions of the VAD Pro?
ANSWER: The Quick Reference Guide, referred to in the last question, contains this content as well, including a handy "reset" guide for re-booting the VAD pro when required.
QUESTION:How do I update software on the VAD Pro, once I have registered the tool?
Follow these steps:
- Save the desired software files (located under the "Software Updates" headings on the VAD Pro Forum) to an easy to find location on your computer.
- Open the “Palm Desktop” program on your computer
- Click on the “Quick Install” button in the left hand column which will open a new dialog box
- In the top right corner under “User” select your Palm device name, or create a name if you have not done a sync previously.
- Click the “Add” button in the bottom left corner
- Select the update files from the location on your computer in which they were saved. (It is recommended, when you save updates to your computer, that you keep them in folders labeled with a date to avoid confusion with past or future updates)
- click “Open” after each file is selected. This will add the file to the list of items to be installed on your VAD Pro during the next Hot Sync.
- Close the Quick Install dialog box by clicking on the X in the top right corner.
- Connect your VAD Pro to your Desktop computer using the supplied USB device.
- Turn on your VAD Pro, and tap the arrow in the top right hand corner of the screen, next to the screen name. Select the screen titled "All", which displays all applications on the tool in alphabetical order.
- Tap the "HotSync" button on your VAD Pro to initiate the synchronization process. This will upload the files to your VAD Pro. Once completed, start each diagnostic application once to overwrite old versions of the software embedded in the VAD Pro memory
QUESTION: I am having a difficult time establishing communication between the VAD Pro and a vehicle. What can I do?
Exit the VAD application you are using.
- Instead of tapping connect over and over again, try exiting the application completely by tapping the “house” icon. This will erase the program temporary memory and should allow you to reconnect. Any vehicle selected from the vehicle list should still remain in the connect screen.
If step 1 does not work,
Exit the VAD application and disconnect/reconnect the VAD Pro OBD-II cable.
- Try exiting the application completely by tapping the “house” icon as before.
- In addition, disconnect the VAD Pro diagnostic cable from the OBD-II port of the vehicle and reconnect it firmly. Wiggle the connector from side to side slightly if necessary. Once
re-connected, try and initiate the VAD application again.
If step 2 does not work,
Exit the VAD application, disconnect/reconnect the VAD Pro cable, and cycle the ignition on and off
- Try exiting the application completely by tapping the “house” icon on the VAD Pro as before.
- Disconnect the VAD Pro cable from the OBD-II port of the vehicle.
- Cycle the ignition off, count to 10, then return the ignition to either the ON or RUN position.
- Reconnect the VAD Pro cable to the vehicle. (you may hear a beeping sound)
- Once re-connected, try and initiate the VAD application again.
